My Tiny Brood of Backyard Chooks

chooks, hens or chickens?

Chickens staying within the perimeter of the property

My chickens free range all day. My fence is not chicken proof.

But they don’t seem to wander outside of the property. They are being quite brave today. They have decided to wander under the fence to scratch and peck at the top of a ten foot drop down onto the road. I think if the road was the same level as the fence, I might be more worried that they might step onto it but I don’t think they will fly down the steep bank onto the road. ย There is nothing down there for them.

Yes, good chickens. Come on back.

  1. They came back not because they are being safety conscious but because their personal photographer is around and they want to make sure you get a good picture. “Look at me, look at me!!!” ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. My chickens free range and they never go too far. They are smart little guys and gals! Once in a while I see one get farther out than normal but they always come running back after a bit.

  3. Is it really a 10-foot drop? Is that a slight exaggeration?

  4. Your chickens are smarter than mine. Mine free range if myself or my wife are at home. I thought they had learned where their boundaries were because they have been staying in the yard and haven’t ventured to places where I have chased them back from with a blue handled broom in the past. Jack, my rooster, sets up quite a squawk when he sees that broom. Well yesterday I went to check on them and there was Jack perched on the quaint New England stone wall that runs along the road and two of the Ladies were crossing the road. Broom time, lets see how they do today.

  5. I’m amazed that mine have never shown any desire to leave our yard, even though there are places they could fly over the fence if they really wanted to. I’ve wondered if it’s because they need to stay within sight of their coop to feel secure?
